Concept "Comic Stars Fighting" Remake concept

Idea or proposal that does not yet have substantial progress.
Sounds like a fun nostalgia project! Fighting feature creep is the real endgame boss when working on any fangame. For the enemy sprites, maybe check out some of the old GBA Bleach or Dragon Ball Z asset sheets? They usually fit that aesthetic pretty well. Good luck with the project.
Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure kinda has usable sprites but there's nothing from the Bleach games I can use, the DS games' proportions aren't the "pocket" style of JUS.

fair point on the bleach ds sprites. they definitely look too "tall" compared to the jus style. maybe check out some assets from the old one piece gba games or even some fan-made sheets on spriters resource? finding decent enemies that don't look out of place is always a massive pain in openbor projects. can't wait to see how kenshin turns out though, good luck tho !

I'm currently using the pirate enemies from One Piece GBA and i'll get to making the marines from the same game sometime soon

CSS Mockup.png

Made a mockup of what i'd want the CSS to look like - greyed out portraits will be baked onto the player select background, while the colorized portraits and the images of them in the corners and name text will be done with the "select" animations.

Turns out I was wrong about Kazuki's sprites limiting his moveset (sort of, i feel like he's as underwhelming as Ichigo turned out), I just saw eight directions he could go in and thought "I can't use this". Also, I replaced the super and burst effects.

Ace complete (his falling animation was easier to do than I thought) + a very empty-looking stage select. I got the general layout done for the stage select, but there's no entity graphics - I spent quite a bit of time trying to redo the layout from v3.6 of Comic Stars Fighting's stage select and since the map is just an image taken from somewhere and making it 8-bit results in color loss, I went and did RGB separation for that.

Sorry for the bad gameplay the controls somehow mapped jump to the "H" key and idk how that happened.

good job so far. i cant wait to play the first demo
I have an outdated test build i made for feedback no one's downloaded afaik, but I want to at least get a few more characters done (might do work on the other One Piece reps because they're the first couple characters you fight in v3.6 of the original flash game) and actual levels made before I make a demo. What's shown in the videos is a test level.

Second test build i whipped up real quick:

NOT a demo as there's nothing besides a few test levels and 10 playable characters - more than enough to get feedback on but not enough to be considered a playable game yet.

Just to warm myself up to OpenBOR again since i've been more focused on an RPG Maker project that's ALSO in development hell, I had the thought of very loosely remaking this janky flash game I used to play a LOT in middle school in OpenBOR:

So far, the only work i've done of this concept are 3 playable characters (an incomplete Goku, Kenshiro, and a bonus not-quite-anime character - the latter two were holdovers from a previous JUS-styled project that got scrapped). I want to get basically everyone from the original Comic Stars Fighting EXCEPT the transformations, Gintoki, Enel, Tobi, Yoh, and the Fairy Tail and Reborn characters remade, as well as a couple "newcomers". Characters not from Shonen Jump or even originally from a manga/anime are also on the table as long as they have decent enough sprites. I can already feel the feature creep lol.

There are very few sprites I could use for generic enemies, but since the gameplay of this gonna be much simpler than the last project, I don't see much of a problem in that anymore. I know I could maybe get away with using One Piece GBA or Naruto Ninja Council enemies, but aside from them, there's nothing.

hi
Oh man, Comic Stars Fighting brings back so much nostalgia! Remaking that classic flash game in OpenBOR sounds like an awesome project, though definitely a massive undertaking with that huge roster. For enemies, maybe check out Jump Ultimate Stars rips or custom sprite sheets? Good luck managing the feature creep!
