TITLE: DOUBLE DRAGONS
An homage to the OG Double Dragon series and a memorial to creator Yoshihisa Kishimoto Yoshihisa Kishimoto - Wikipedia

BACKGROUND: Not many people haven't HEARD about the game. But for those like me who like taking that deeper dive....
(i.e. if Europe has their paintings, and Egypt their Pyramids, then why not video games from Japan? After all....OUR JEWELS to the world are pop-art, like good movies, rock music etc. etc.)
Double Dragon was the first sublime fighting game, a one of kind cultural phenomena, that has inspired the best fighting games since (e.g. Final Fight, Streets of Rage, etc.)
It also slyly was a great mature fairy tale, in that small window of mature adventure content (e.g. JAWS, Mad Max 1 & 2, Escape From New York, Robocop, Total Recall, anything Heavy Metal) and B-movie fare like "The Warriors", duh and anime like "Fist of the North Star."
It was really a great two part game, Double Dragon 1 and Double Dragon 2 The Revenge, games that open with brutal misogynistic violence. That ending in Part 2, predates the Last of Us, as two heroes consumed by vengeance fight their shadow selves. leaving us with a photo of better times and their woman crying, as she'd be disappointed in them both.
And, that complicated romance between the twin brothers and ONE woman. A lot of subversive drama there.
In the villain Willy, clearly he's a mix between anti hero Max Rockatansky AND with that suped up machine gun the Duke from New York from the John Carpenter film "Escape from New York"(1981). The game TAKES PLACE in New York presumably after a nuclear war.
Taken together, it created great alchemy that helped this game survive into the present day even if all lore is a bit forgotten. Not in Japan, China or the Koreas though. Marian is practically worshipped as a goddess in the pop-culture sense, and the mythology of violence around here.
And, that's a lot of pontification and hyperbole, I'd admit.lol... So, if you already don't like hearing all this geeking out, then my Double Dragon fork ain't for you. Yes, it is JUST a video game after all, so I'm not gonna make this stuff sound like "Gone With The Wind." But, on the other hand, we wouldn't have Streets of Rage 4 or even games on this forum had it not been for Kishimoto. So....
PITCH: I wanted a very OG completist Double Dragon that acts as a what-if sequel to the first two games, and treats the 3 (awful IMHO) arcade game as a side story (though I love the NES version, that is the TRUE sequel in my book).
I imagine an alternate universe where Final Fight comes out so Technosoft of Japan throws down the gauntlet and release a third game that treats the previous two games in the series as folklore from the mythical post-apocalyptic world of NYC they gave, giving us the TRUE STORY now, which acts as a Champion edition of everything that game before it, with many characters to choose from, many QOL life enhancements in gameplay and pixel art. And acts as a proper conclusion with an ending that caps of this series properly.
Practically speaking, this game also acts as a love letter to the openbor community, with the game/DD-fork itself I am working on acting as a composite of the best OG content we've seen and experienced so far IMHO, while staying true to the OG DD lore.
HIGHLIGHTS: (coming soon! meanwhile feel free to ask questions/feedback...so far I've put a lot of work into this, sharing my progress in the below screencap)
