What's really for kids

Ok, so this argument starts from sonic fans and the game, Shadow the Hedgehog, where the game is bashed because "It's a kids game" but some random user on youtube. At one point, the game was given a 1 out of 5 in a review just because Shadow used guns in it. Yes, I am aware the game has it flaws here and there, but the main issue is the games maturity, because "cute furry animals are not for guns and cursing". I even mentioned there are games that feature those animals to another user:
>Stafox series
>Sly Cooper(If you never played the game, there's a female fox cop that uses a gun)
>Earthworm Jim
>Ratchet & Clank
>Buck Bumble(N64 title I had the pleasure of playing)
>Conkers Bad Fur Day
^The user goes onto to say that these games ARE for kids though(I forgot conker int hat list though) even though they all feature animals with guns.
Outside of guns, sonic seems to be the only character people say is for kids, yet nobody ever says it for Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, and Kirby.

Bring this argument to a friend of mine, he had this to say, which is what I want ot get into this topic about:
In this case, then we need to redefine what's for kids. In this guy's case, he defines a game's maturity level based on the types of characters present. If they look like animals, then it maybe or should be for kids. This is ignoring the fact that even Looney Tunes had profanity and intense racism back in the mid 1940s and cartoons such as Frits the Cat. With historical examples, having animals as characters does not automatically constitute as "kids" stuff. Having something marketed to kids does not automatically mean it's exclusively for them, and it becomes more difficult to try and dictate that as kids grow up. But they grow up being influenced by the s**t they grew up with. I like Pokemon. Can't nobody tell me not to catch a Heracross if I want to

This isn't just a sonic topic though, it's a topic asking, "what's really for kids" by our standards. While you make your comment, take this observations in mind:
>Shadow the Hedgehog is bashed for being a kids game with guns by teens and adults
>A lot of sonic fans, including said people who bash shadow, are into My Little Pony
>Said people have no problem with this: http://brodare.deviantart.com/art/London-2012-271565713
>The kids said people defend from Shadow, play a lot of Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto

Also, regarding sonic history, there used to be a character named Nack the weasel, who stared in only 3 games. From what I read a few years, he was taken out of the series because parents were afraid of his fang and gun. It was also teh main reason he used a cork gun in Sonic the fighters:

I also found some articles on the whole "for kids" deal as well:

A lot of info here I know, but I felt I needed to ask this in the general purpose.

Id say internet is not for kids below 13/14, games like conker are not for kids as well, games where characters have guns but they dont kill are fine with me, but me even at the age of 21 i had some traumatic experiences on internet after seeing some things and i do think that internet should not be free for all kids, its a place without any rules.Sometimes people put up stupid avatars and i have to explain my sisters daughter why and whats happening on the picture and i have to lie cause shes just too small for this and its on normal forums, people just dont give a damn and choose to share whatever shocking stuff there is, its like world is only at their age, they dont care about others, also some people would laugh seeing people being executed and some people would be scared and shocked by it, it depends but nobody has to see it, curiosity was never a good reason.
Sometimes guns in cartoons are just for symbolic reasons, charaxters are shootign at each other but they arent bleeding, besides cartoons try to preserve good vs evil thing.
Conker is not sonic and gta is not conker, i play kirby with my sisters daughter and there is some shooting.weapons and stuff but its not like gangsters and stealing stuff, its more like magic abilities so its different.
Ah theres is also one very important thing, some people asked what the mario game is about will tell you its a game where you run and collect coins and some wil tell that its a game where you jump on the enemies and some will tell its a game where you need to beat teh stage for time and make that flag at the end go up.Its very different what people see, different minds, for me mario was never about collecting coins, i never cared about points in games but some people see only points and nothing more, beating the game and collect max points is the only thing that matters for them, its really different with different people.

I can understand your point here. I'm not saying at all that there are things that kids shouldn't be subjected to till a certain age, but also, in the general sense of Shadow the, people our age are bashing the game for not being "kiddy enough", but why does that matter to someone of age and no children to defend?

For example, what if you and some friends, or your age, were watching the Lion King, a the scene comes up with Mufasa is killed by Scar, and one of your freinds has a problem with it because it's too dark for kids, the same friend you know has no problem frequently watching spongebob squarepants. It's at this point kids are not involved in the matter, and even if they were, would the Lion King really be that bad for that one instance of murder? Sure wasn't when I was a kid, but this is jsut an example.

my personal belief with what's for kids and what is not for kids goes something like this. if a child cannot or problems distinguishing what is fantasy and what is real. should not be allowed to play games etc etc

I agree with ctrl_alt_die.

Personally, I don't care about characters being animal or human. What is presented is what matters to me.

Quite true Blodebane.

What I don't get is, it's ok to bash a game featuring animals with guns, but if you said something bad about My little pony or Kirby's Epic Yarn... or this:

Suddenly, you're the bad guy.
