character not showing up

Hey thanks for helping out. Does anyone know why I cant get my character to show up? Whenever I try to select, it looks like a huge box with lines, I attached a picture. Is it because my sprite is too big? Is the palette wrong? I am not sure

thanks. i am new to this. I thought I applied the palette...I must have done it wrong somehow. I am trying to do it on Gimp.

I did notice that my palette repeated a lot of the same colors or what were very close to the same colors? Would this be an issue? I am hand drawing my sprites and blending many of the colors so alot of the gradients are similar. For instance, when i am blending the gray part of the shirt with the black part, well a gradient mix of both the gray and black look very similar to the black and it shows up in the palette.

I will try it again today when i get off work and try to be more careful with the tutorial I am following on youtube maybe i missed something.

Your sprites are limited to a palette of 256 colours so for now until you get used to how they work I would avoid blending colours and gradients... Behold.

This sprite has 16 colours, the fluorescent turquoise colour is the background colour, this will be transparent in game.

make sure your background colour is the first colour in your palette otherwise the colour will show around your sprite in game.

The reason you should avoid blending colours is because each individual colour is picked up on the palette and they will be very similar and hard to work with.

thanks, yeah I had the background color as the first color in the palette, but maybe I will edit my picture so its not as blended and see if it works with less colors.

This was very helpful thanks. I am curious about PalApply. I downloaded it, but really I dont know how to use it. I was wondering if there is any tutorial here in the forums. i searched and searched but could not find anything.

thanks for the help

Pal apply applies a palette to one or multiple sprites, I wrote some basic instructions here.

make sure you have Pal Apply v2

thanks, things are still not really working out for me. I took away all of the blends. However, it still came out with alot of colors. I think the problem might be with the program i am using. Its not a sprite creation program. Its just a digital art program on my tablet and I am drawing with a stylus. It seems that even when I am not blending it still doesnt come out clean. If i try to draw black, it seems black but when I zoom im, its black for 4 pixels and grey pixels surrounding it...same with every color. So it still is kind of blending. Is there a good program that yall can recommend for drawing sprites? particularly on a tablet if possible.

I followed the directions completely again for setting a palette on Gimp and this is my result. not sure whats going on,.

thanks

I made a vector image of my sprites, shrunk it down, converted it to png then put it into pixel studio...it doesnt look very good anymore....put still I get hundereds of colors on my palette, many are very close to the background color and the sprite looks like a mess almost inverted weird colors..not sure what else to do. I have been at this for 7 hours now...if anyone has any ideas that would be very helpful.

are there other tutorials on how to create a palette with gimp? I am not sure if I am doing this right?

thanks

Sounds to me like you are using the wrong drawing tools in your program, use pen/pencil and do not use brush

left is pencil dot just one single colour right is brush dot and is over 150 different colours so what's happening is when you're doing your final conversions probably thousands of colours are being discarded to fit onto a 256 colour palette and making your art look not so pleasing.

You have to make sure the same palette is applied to every single sprite for your character and each colour in that palette represents the correct part of your sprite for example blue jeans, brown skin, blonde hair, you can't just grab a palette from anywhere and apply it to all your sprites :)

Thanks, I used the pen tool and it still does it..maybe I need to mess with the settings and try again.  I also made a vector image of the sprite, then converted it to png,  and the same problem happened..thanks for your help. I'll try the find a different pen tool, or mess with the settings and see what happens. I use a program called artflow,  that is not as popular as others maybe it's just not good at this..may I ask what program you use? Maybe it would be helpful

Could it be that I forgot to set the offset and hitbox? I didnt think that would effect the image though.

Thanks

okay, i bought a drawing tablet and redid my sprite with Gimp. I was having trouble at first with the palette again but found out that I needed to switch it to RGB and back to Indexed, then it worked fine. So I finally got my character to show up!! I still need to work on getting the quality better since when i scaled it down, the quality was not good anymore. So back to drawing again....but thanks for your help!!! This is a big step. I appreciate it.
