Doggo of Rage

Since this is my first message on this board, I'll introduce myself real quick: My name is Stefan and I'm a 2d (animation) artist.

If you're interested in seeing some of my other work, you can either visit my homepage http://www.stefanbilly.com or my rather new instagram profile (it's pretty empty, but has some stuff that isn't on my homepage) https://www.instagram.com/goaty_fish/ .

Now for the main thingy. I've started working on a Corgi - character sprite sheet, which will be perfectly compatible with Streets of Rage 2 and 3 (and ofc any hack or independed fan game). I'm trying to make it look as reminiscent of the original graphical style as possible.
Here's the preview:

However, I recommend clicking the link to the pixeljoint page, because it allows comfortable zoomin in and out:
http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/129822.htm

From left to right:
1st row: Idle (I'll probably add something fun here later on), Walking, Running, Base Punch;
2nd row: Jump, Forward Jump Attack, Blitz (Running Attack) "Slippy Dash";
3rd row: Grab - Back Attack, Being Hit, Offense Special "Doggo Drill"

There are some more sprites, that I didn't include yet, because the animations were unfinished, or because they were just slight alteration of the above. Also, I'll probably refine some of them later on.

Also, for the future I'm thinking about creating a Weddel Seal and a Goat for additional Animal Characters. Ideally, together with Victy, this could be turned into a hack with all 4 characters being animals.

Also on a sidenote, posting here was quite a challenge, thanks to the verification process, which doesn't work in Firefox/ Chrome at all / the Image link for the letter test are broken.

I LOVE the dog sprites. Id suggest making an original game with no borrowed assets. your artwork deserves mainstream attention.

best of luck

I have to agree here. But I would love to see that dog in action. Kratus what do you think of a bonus character for you Game?

Kratus has an awesome SOR game.

Hey, thanks for all the encouragement. I'd actually love to start my own original game projects eventually, but if I'm realistic, I lack the ressources for something more ambitious. Fopr now, I'll definately finish the corgi though. Also looking forward to the chance of seeing it re-appear in some future game projects here, haha!

Great work on Corgy sprites  ;D

As for its sprite set, it is missing PAIN sprites. They are played when player is hit with non-knockdown attack. you should create those  :)

Other animations such as GRAB set, JUMPATTACK2 and chain combo are optional in OpenBoR. Well, you can make playable which knocked down on any hit but that's not recommended

Thank you my friend!

Nice sprites, congratulations! Your character deserve an exclusive game but you can use my SOR2X to test your characters, like as starting point. There are some bonus characters that I have plans to add in the next updates, I can make some tests with your dog, if you want.

Ha, thanks again for the nice feedback! Sorry for the late reply. I was planning on showing some new moves with my next answer here, but unfortunately I had some frustrating "bad art days", where nothing seems to look the way I want it to.

I'm currently testing the sprites with the pancakes tool, since I want to implement the Corgi into the original Streets of Rage 3. One unfortunate limitation is, that I can't seem to remove moves from characters, so I have to wrap my head around how some of them could translate to a dog.

But I also have some ideas for custom moves and stuff, which could potentially go to BOR, or other independend games, based on SOR. For example, it'd be fun if in 2 player co - op, when using a human character alongside the Corgi, it'd walk it with a leash. Or at least for team attacks (one player holding the other player).

Atm this is still a WIP, a lot of moves are still missing. As for grab/ vault, I really wish I didn't have to add those, because they're giving me quite a headache and I just can't seem to make them look any good. I'm also going to implement the custom weapon attacks that SOR3 had.

Really, thanks for all the praise, it's really nice to see how well my dog is being received here :) . I'll check it out, thanks for the info. Also sure, go ahead. I'll upload a usable sprite sheet soon, but first I want to fix / finish some stuff. Even though it's still a WIP, most mandatory animations are completed at this point, so it should be enough to test with.

I really enjoy its animations too!

I'm very curious how playable this char would be (I'm not fan of Roo as NPC) but it would be undoubtfully a great funny one! :D
I understand that imagining certain moves is a big pain but I hope we'll be able to help you. ^^

Yeah, I understand you and that's exactly why I leave Pancake and came to Openbor. Although the Pancake is a excellent tool to hack SOR2/SOR3 games, the problem is the rom limitations. Was a painful days when I tried a lot of hex codes to remove or block some animations or make custom moves. You can see some examples here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP75iA2wLACP1p-3r2TB6Gg

Corgi can be a very good NPC partner too

I'm thinking on how to script the leash stuff but IMO team attacks would be better and easier to code

Fortunately in OpenBoR grab stuffs are optional so you can skip creating those sprites  :D

Well I'm not planning to settle for a version / tool, but instead spend enough time to actually finish the whole character with all possible animations, because it offers more options to users who want to implement the dog into their games. Also, I don't want people to add missing animations to my sprite sheet because they need some that aren't available - hope that doesn't sound rude or arrogant, but I've seen stuff like this happen many times and it always diminishes the quality enormously.

In any case, I did something a little different for the time being, here's some kind of cover artwork:

wheresmynuggers.jpg

Also I decided to name the corgi "Nuggers" :D.

And finally, just for fun, I wrote a character backstory as well:

Nuggers really enjoys happy dog walks, but ever since MR X took over the city, his goons are lurking around everywhere on the streets. Now dog walks are no fun anymore! Enough is enough! Nuggers had it with them street punks! It's time to show who's a good boy! It's time to mark your territory! Whooooo let the dog out?! WHO!? WHO!? WHO!? WHO?!

Nuggers looks really good! Graphics: Perfection! (rate: 10/10)

That cover design looks excellent!

Thanks man! Btw I made the logo myself, instead of using existing ressources, although I'm not exactly sure why I did that, now that I think about it lol.

Also to contribute something, here's the "shock" animation.
Not sure if it's identifyable, but I added a little easter egg (doggo had a snack)

doggobuzz.gif

This is a nice addition to the Sor universe.
That's remember me that I've got a panther wip for this mod. With these animals, we can build an Amiga "Wild Streets" remake and name it "Wild Street of Rage" :)

Ideally I wanted to dd some other fun animals, but yeah... Not like I'm making any progress with this very boy.
I've added a rolly animation tho. It'd make sense to use it for quick up and down moving, but I like it a bit too much to have it underused for something like that...

I tried to steal your Doggo to add it to the 'Slashers but the results where disastrous -

it would have been such a nice/unpleasant surprise...

i can't edit characters on this machine for some reason using the - i cant remember the tools name - but it crashes.
Also, the doggo as it is - its not enought , i was thinking that to fit the Horror theme , the doggos special would have to be a Where-Doggo for a brief period of time (basically he should Hulk out & turn humanoid for about 5 seconds , Like Rick in splatter house)

I'm impressed! You were able to mimic the SOR style perfectly!

IMO you should start programming him asap its not hard and you have alreadt most sprutes, it just takes walk and idle to do character , other anims can be idle or walk frames blinked as pain and you can change them later.
Dont affiliate it with sor and make it your own, maybe a parody but you woyldnt want sega strike caude they did that to sor remake and it would be a shame to be ordered to remove the game.
This is potential for original game in the same genre and style of sor.
Your art is apectacular and deserves own game , you dont need to mimic something else.Cause ifgame will grow you can copyright it and sell merch and all that stuff, with sor assets you cant.
I made heman but i wasnt hit wit cease and desist cause marvel is not sega, depends on company and if you use their assets/sprites.
would be cool if doggo would transform into beast version kinda like muscular werewolf, but thats just me
