Kong's sprite rips is the classic sprite ressource to me. 8)
It's perfect for persons who want to work on well known characters.
He also added some less known game characters too.

I really hope to see some news by him one day...

I use GIMP but I have a hard time putting layers into 3 or more. I'm always limited to 2 layers when I either copy from image and paste it to there or creating new layers.
