Help with Stage

Hello! I am new to this forum.  :)
I need help with the panel and background where my panel would appear but my background doesn't. I first used a panel with a pink background, but the pink would end up being on top of the background. I tried using a transparent background, but that also didn't work as it had the background white. I also noticed that the background seemed to be behind the panel on the bottom, but not appearing on the top.  :-\
Hopefully it wasn't confusing for anyone. Thank you for anyone that helps.

With a transparent panel:

I tried using backgrounds that were in the mod, but they don't work either which makes me think that the panel is covering the background. (Btw I am using gimp.)

I'm sorry for asking such a noobish question, but what do you mean by if the pink color is the first color of the palette?

I also notice that when I open a png image of the panel with transparency there isn't any white on top.

Make sure the transparent colour is the first entry in the palette, index 0.
