Just here to vent my frustration

I've been a member since 2018 but I've never really been active, sometimes I didn't even visit the forum or the website in general for several years. Recently I've found some of my old backups of some openbor games and played them again, which made me come back here in the hope to find more good games. Well, that also reminded me of why I barely bothered to show up here. There are barely any games that I actually like, even if they are deemed to be some of the best by the community. Either they have no interesting playable characters for me or the difficulty balancing is horrible or they are just boring or they annoy the hell out of me or...

I mean look at my "extensive" collection of games that I like. And even most of them I consider only okay at best.

Yeah, I know I'm very critical but come on, the way to make good beat 'em ups was mastered in the 90s so it's not unreasonable to expect something of the same quality today, even if it's a free fan game. I grew up with those classics, today they have become too complicated and somehow often more unfair than the old arcade games, that were made to be difficult to squeeze all the coins from your wallet. You either get juggled across the level or you're easily stun locked while they drain your health in seconds or every hit sends you flying. And it's nice to have some special attacks, but they are a pain to execute, at least when you play with a Xbox One controller. The analog stick is way too sensitive in openbor, I can barely go down through the menus without the menu acting like I flicked the stick to the right to activate something. All this makes it almost impossible to execute special attacks, which is why I ALWAYS mod the games have the special attacks on one button instead. Or you execute them by mistake even though all I wanted was to move the character to an enemy to attack them normally but openbor read my input as "d f a".

And before anyone comes and says "go back to your little kiddy games that a toddler could beat": yes, I like my games simple and relatively easy but I also love games like Ninja Gaiden. The 3D Ninja Gaiden games, not the old NES ones.
Or in case anyone wants to tell me "go make your own game then": if it were that easy I absolutely would do that. Don't tell me I can't criticize something unless I'm able to do something similar myself. That has always been the dumbest excuse to try to silence critics. If you order something in a restaurant and it tastes like crap the chef won't tell you to cook for yourself instead.

End of rant.

You were just fine right up until here:

Don't tell me I can't criticize something unless I'm able to do something similar myself. That has always been the dumbest excuse to try to silence critics. If you order something in a restaurant and it tastes like crap the chef won't tell you to cook for yourself instead.

No, but if you are rude about it he can and probably will throw you out of the restaurant. You don't get to show up, level criticism over an entire community of creators, then preemptively take an abrasive, hostile stance toward rebuttals without consequence. That's not how the world works, and it's WAY not how this community operates. So friendly warning - Knock it off.

Now as to your point, we already had this discussion at least fifty times through the years, and I'll refer to earlier self:

Interestingly, your second sentence refutes the first :)
My short answer is: learn and make your own then.

But a curious fact: all the people I've seen arrive here saying that all games were crap and that they were going to make a "real game"... failed miserably. We even had another exemple recently...

You are free to learn and try to make your own game. But I guarantee you've already made a terrible impression with this behavior, and people will prefer to spend their little free time on anything else rather than helping you.

Here we are a community. It works like in real life: if you can't behave in a community, don't be part of it.

in case anyone wants to tell me "go make your own game then": if it were that easy I absolutely would do that.

Allow me to tell you that then. It would be better to just make your own game yourself. I had been doing that, I'm happy with the results and I didn't have to waste time venting like this.

Secondly, your excuse for not doing it IS the reason you can't find good beatmups that you like. It's not easy but at least those devs are doing it. They could learn to be better next time.

Thank you @DCurrent for finding good things in some French authors and for also sharing these few words in French. In a way, I greatly appreciate the gesture, and wise people can be found everywhere in the world.

@SoundOfDarkness , your words demonstrate an inability to put yourself in the shoes of an amateur developer, as well as a lack of understanding of the work involved in finishing a game.

Often, when you have nothing positive to say and/or you don't want to offer help through constructive criticism, or even contribute in any way to the development of what you love, then it's better to abstain.

I agree with @Bloodbane that if you're dissatisfied with what's being offered (by harshly criticizing everyone who put in the effort), then it's better to learn to cook for yourself, according to your own preferences.

In psychology, this is summarized in these few words: "Either you accept (the current situation and the games as they are), or you change (and you make the effort that will generate this change)."

Btw those games you are showing in those folders are old af by now, there are several interesting games around, take a better look, and If you still don't like the most recent ones, you either make them yourself or pay someone to make them the way you want them to be.

If you are not willing to do that, then you can take a seat and watch us developing our visions into reality, instead of complaining about other dudes tastes in games.
