As a kid of the 80s, I always wanted to see a kick-ass He-Man and She-Ra videogame in the vein of the TMNT Arcade games.

The Filmation cartoons, because of their constant use of stock animation, kind of looked like a videogame in many ocassions. So I was thinking of how cool it would be to see an Openbor game with graphics ripped directly from the He-Man and She-Ra DVDs. The resolution of the module would be 720x480, the closest to the resolution of the DVDs.

If I try to do it all by myself the game would not be ready by this lifetime. It would be cool if we could assemble a group and distribute tasks so the whole thing would not feel like a chore. We would have to take screenshots of the episodes, create the sprites and backgrounds, program the whole thing, get the music, etc.

Out of curiosity I started making a She-Ra sprite sheet to see if this idea is feasible. I think is perfectly doable.

So what do you say? Is anyone else here a fan of the Masters of the Universe... er, universe? LET'S DO THIS!

the mobile game ("He-Man - the most powerful game in the universe") has some nice sprites - though I think it would benefit from better animation. If someone were to rip those sprites that could get your He-Man mod done much earlier... not exactly what you have in mind, though...

nsw25, I've seen videos of that MUGEN verison. It's pretty cool, but as you said, not exactly what I had in mind.

erf_beto I have that game, it's fun.

I'm re-uploading the He-Man Demo PAK now.  Check the download section a bit later, once a mod approves it.
UPDATE: Here's the link:  http://www.chronocrash.com/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item140

The mod has SNK style sprites while the sprite sheets  below are Capcom style, so that might be an issue.

Here's all the He-Man sprites I have been able to find.  Good luck!

Exactly the same idea was mentioned about 3 years ago, realistically its not possible to do without editing because theres not really many attack animations in animated show, no pain animations and jump attacks so you would have to edit lot of stuff.
I was thinking about animating he-man characters and make small mod using my method for animating sprites, like this:

I have folder on my hdd with scanned cels from animated show i found that original pencil sketches look so much better than painted over frames

Would be hard to retain such details in game but i would use pencil drawings as base for characters, for backgrounds i dont know if it would be possible to get some because most are just one screen only, you cant make them longer but you can get them in much better quality than ripped dvd frames. Now if i only would find good reason and motivation to do this, i could probably make 2 playable characters or something and 2 types of enemies just for combo juggling fun because to be honest i dont even play story mody on my fightin spirit mod at all, i prefere to have many enemies on screen at once and just do combos and juggling for fun i dont remember when i last time played story mode, like 2 years ago, but i play combo arena very often to this day.

Count Monte, thank for uploading the PAK. That would be interesting to see.

bWWd:
Good to see that the idea has been mentioned before, it means there's interest.

I'm not too sure about the project being unrealistic just based on the lack of animations on the original show. Just by fast forwarding through one She-Ra DVD, I found an idle frame, a jumping animation, something that can be used as a jump kick (the one I posted), and one attack. From memory I am sure there's a "pain" and "die" animations in other episodes.

Of course if what you're looking for is a character with many different attack animations like in a fighting game, then that could be an issue. But for a beat em up, I'm of the opinion that the simpler, the better. Two-three attacks and one jump attack would be more than OK in my book.

Still, there might be some instances when we would have to make a new frame either from scratch or by modifying existing ones. Your method would come handy then (those sprites you posted are really nice)

The penciled drawings do look a lot better than the DVD screencaps but as you say, the issue is availability. BTW I had two original penciled sheets and I don't know where they are now :/

If you find the motivation to do make characters, and I hope you do, you could join me. I could take animations from the show, "spritize" them, and send them over to you to make the actual openbor chars. Maybe one or two. Let me know.

I was experimenting with that idea to turn animations from dvd to sprites and i was resizing animations so they would resemble sprites more with thick lines like 1 pixel only and quite good sharpness, my 1ghz android phone runs mods in 640x480 quite fine with 60fps, i didnt checked 720x480, i think pal dvd is 720x576 or 540.
I even tried to do he-man mod about 5 years ago maybe even more but its not easy to get sprites, i mean it wasnt easy, now its easier for me but i have about 5 games in wips state already all with playable characters already made fully by me and im not really excited to throw myself into next one ;D
I think closest game to he-man realm and style overall was metamorphic force
Metamorphic Force (JAA) - No Deaths, Claude (Part 1)

lol I love this idea you can use my shera i made one sprite from scratch she is in my sprite thread here.. Also I would use chars from this game
http://www.spriters-resource.com/other_systems/darkawake/
you can edit into heman and shera and then use dungeon fighter online enemies for the enemies :) There is also a heman shera and skullitor for mugen.  And there is a game you can ask oillusiona to rip sprites from that would be perfect
He-Man: She-Ra update trailer- Available now

Or if you want to go old school use golden axe styled sprites you can turn tyris into adora/shera and that other guy to heman/adam you can have them transform into heman and shera half way through levels like on power rangers snes

Orko's animation is cool, but He-Man is strange. He is flaping his arms, like a goose.
He should have a more fighter/wrestler stance.

If you plar Marvel Alliance at facebook, take a look at Colossus' stance

Yeah i have to lookup his stance and pick the best, i think ill watch some episodes of cartoon to find something.

Maybe a little slower. He seam to be under some drug, a kinda out of his mind.
Don't make the arms move linked to torso move, looks like he is angry like hulk. I think the torso should not "bend" that much.

Im not sure about that low stance because i kinda wanted walking to be a bit like in cartoon but i cant do it with that stance

Wow, this He-Man animation looks absolutely FANTASTIC!
Keep up the good work!  :D

the walk animation at the left is better. The one at the right looks like he is pissed off.
Maybe you can use that for when he is low health
