Looking for Good Open bor modules for homebrewed new 3ds

Hello I'm Goldfire345 I'm new here atleast as far as posting and kinda wanna ask around and find some good modules to try out for the 3ds port of openbor but due to the memory constraints of the device I'm kinda limited in the ones I can try. If possible please limit suggestions to modules at or below 150mb or ones that run well on weaker devices.

Any suggestions?

Yeah... people need to quit porting OpenBOR onto every toaster with a screen.

In all seriousness, welcome to the community @Goldfire345, but I'm only half kidding about the ports. The 3Ds is an unofficial port we had nothing to do with, and until today I didn't even know existed. There are plenty of "smaller" modules out there, but I don't have a clue how they would perform since the port could vary widely compared to the core engine in memory efficiency, CPU load, etc., and I don't know a whole lot about the 3Ds architecture to speculate.

Wish I could tell you something better. Maybe another member here has heard of or messed around with that port before.

Thanks for the reply
In my experience if the file size is over 150mb it'll either crash to the home menu while trying to load the module or it will run out of memory during play and crash when trying to load a new section

Anything under that size seems to load fine. I'm not really picky for files i just figured If anyone knew good modules it would be here😁

Memory is not related to file size, is related to efficiency usage of entities/features versus additional features that may require more complex coding.
More basic .paks will work on older platforms regardless if they weight 100MB or 200MB.

File size is more related to the music files. You can have old .paks 200MB files using many .bor files that work even on Dreamcast, versus a .pak that uses .ogg files for music for less than 100MB, but still not working on other platforms because the complex coding they have (scripts for additional features).

So “trial and error” is the way to go for the 3DS port of Openbor. Unless somebody else got a list of working mods for that port.

(1st time I hear of that port)

Wow okay I'm glad I came here because my eyes are being opened wide Hmmm i guess i could provide that list, of just about every module I've either loaded, attempted to load, or tested so far with the port

@Goldfire345

NIghtSlashers, & other games that crash:

they crash because they need older versions of the engine to work -

for example Nightslahers X works perfectly & bug-free using OpenBOR 3.0 build 2227 april 23 2009 -
you can try the updated versions (wide or rebalance) , but it has a few bugs the newest engine causes with the old scripts that are still in use.

for the TMNT game its the same, you have to use the openbor that is included in the download

If you find any of my light mods they should work besides maybe warduke.

I did a light mod to rescue palooza but that may never be released but fingers crossed maybe.

This is where i wish i knew which version of open bor the 3ds port is based on
I'll link it and maybe you guys can have a look at it

There's about 4 versions currently but I'm not sure of what the base version is forked from

From what i gather it's a version of 3.0 but which build exactly i don't really know

@Goldfire345

on the PC or the wii, you can see the engine's version and date if you run openbor and see what the menu says on top:

to get the menu, your paks folder has to contain more than one .paK file

for example the select menu window of one i have says on the top left
OpenBOR 3.0 build 2227
and on the top right :
april 23 2009

i don't know if the official openbor github has the older releases with information on their release dates

and some times the engine ports will not have any dates or release information - those usually have no support from this forum, they are bootleggy creations

The build its giving me is
OpenBOR v3.0 Build v.0.0.6 ctr
August 22 2022
(the most recent update) but that really odd build naming convention compared to the norm whare it's like build 2227 (or something close to that) makes it hard to tell
What I'm trying to figure out is which main build is it based on that would let me better know which modules work with it and which ones I can immediately rule out.

Edit: I've sent a message to the author so I'll see where that goes

Got my answer from the man himself

"This is based on OpenBOR v3.0 build 6391.

But in hindsight i noticed i've rebased on the wrong commit, so this is ahead of build 6391 by about 20 commits."

Nightslashers x wide, 21c & rebalance should work with this

unfortunately SOR2X won't because it uses an special engine version by @Kratus -
and even tho NSX 21c is developed with Kratu's engine, it does not take full advantage of it like SOR does,
in pc it has the advantage of better 4 player controller support, since game-play on the 3ds is pretty much single player,
6391 will be fine....

as for the TMNT rescue palooza game, last i heard some fixes to make it compatible where planned - i think....

AHH - before i forget, Evil dead was also recently updated too (evil dead redux)

For night slashers x aside from the original release the file is too large to work on 3ds I think. tried loading 21c but as i expected it didn't even finish loading. it got to the end of the bar before crashing right to home menu.

Indeed, i forgot to warn you -- you might be able to get the size down if you compress the OGG music files to lower quality

How would I do that? I don't have much knowledge of the dev tools and assets can't be pulled out of them without them i don't believe

@Goldfire345
for windows
NSX wide & 21c have paxplode included - you drag the .pak file to paxplode & it will decompress it to a data folder -
erase the big.pak file and replace it with a 0kb version (new - text document - nsx21c.pak) move the data folder out to where the .exe is located and then... go tinto the "music" folder
in windows you can use audacity, and if i'm not mistaken it has the ability to open files & then after you open them you have to export them as lower quality samples with teh same exact name- later on if i find some tool that could do it in a batch i will let you know, but i am pretty sure the music can be compressed to about half the size with no serious loss of quality.

after that, there is another tool called packer.bat, you drag the data folder to it & it creates a new .pak file (ill need to chak that later tho)

for NS rebalance its the same method , but the author seems to have locked it, maybe by accident, there is a download for it that features a pak file that was corrected, but offcially i dont know if the author wishes for his version to be edited

@Goldfire345
another neat thing you can do if you edit the pack is to correct the aspect ratio of the games, use the video.txt file to match the 3d's full screen mode -
4:3 games need heavy level by level by editing tho -
