This Game Deserves a Thread: Ninja Gaiden (Arcade) - The Coolest Beat 'Em Up You (Probably) Never Played
Let's talk about Ninja Gaiden. Not the NES one, not the Xbox reboot - I'm talking about the arcade game from 1988. IMO, one of the coolest, smoothest beat 'em ups ever made... and somehow, a game that way too many people have either never seen or forgotten even existed. This game oozes style. Sure, the move list is tiny on paper, but the way it all comes together makes it feel like you're in a hyper-kinetic ninja movie.
Your offensive toolkit:
What makes it shine is the flow. The movement, the stage interaction, the fluid animation - it all hits differently. You're not just brawling; you're moving like a holywood ninja. Ryu stalks enemies, leaps a full story in a single bound, shoulder-rolls to his feet after being knocked down, and never feels like he’s breaking stride.
The combat has a kind of give-and-take rhythm. You can't stunlock enemies to death, but you can keep up a slick back-and-forth if you’re timing it right. Take on enemies on both sides at once, alternating strikes like you’re in the final scene of a lost Cannon Films classic.
Then there’s the flavor: teleportation effects, bizarre cutscenes, and a "story" that’s basically “Ryu takes a vacation by wrecking a cult.” And somehow, that’s all it needs.

IMO a criminally underrated offering. It just had the bad luck of coming out right before Final Fight. Had the timing been different, this could've been the one everyone name-drops instead of Guy, Cody, and Haggar. Would love to hear from anyone else who's played it - or is about to for the first time!

- Attack Series - A punch, a wheel kick, and a jump spinning heel kick. Land all three, and your enemy goes flying.
- Hanging Kick - Dangle from a signpost or branch and kick left or right for an instant knockdown.
- Neck Throw - No jump kicks here - instead, you get an air-to-ground throw that slams enemies like they owe you money.
- Swipe - Instant knockdown.
- Back Swipe - A follow-up slash that covers your rear.
- Flip Swipe - A mostly useless - but very cool - dive attack during Ryu’s wall flip when the DS is available.
