Question about replacing music files in a preexisting openbor game...

Hey there, I'm pretty new to openbor and the site. I apologize in advance if this is an extremely noobish question, but I was wondering if someone could tell me a straightforward way of editing music that plays in a pre-existing openbor game, for personal use, and return it to pak? I just want to be able to play it on my Wii

I tried looking online first, and I don't know if I just didn't use the right words, but I can't seem to find anything that explains how to only do that

Hi, the first step is to download the needed tools for unpack/pack a game from here: http://www.chronocrash.com/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item323

Then you have to look at the data/music folder for the music files and replace them with yours in .ogg format.

Thank you so much! This definitely helps. All the music files are in .BOR format. I'm not really familiar with that format... Is there anyway to just preview it? I tried using any normal music player, but it didn't work. I also assume I have to name the new music file the same as the old one, right?

There is a bor music player but i‘m not sure if it‘s anyware on the forum to find. I can upload it some time later for you on mediafire.
Normally you should just give the same names to the new files, but the file extention should be also be the same. But since i‘m strongly suggesting you to use .ogg files instead of .bor, the file name will also no matter in this case since you will have then  to edit the levels text files for this anyways. To this we will come later as the last step. First wait for me to upload the bor misic player for you.

Just as a note, you can stick with the .BOR music format if you'd like, using a program called "wav2bor." It's outdated but many old school modders, yours truly included, still use it.

Ogg is the better option going forward, of course.  But I believe .BOR has the most compatibility across platforms.

So just to make sure that I understand, if I change the music formats from .bor to .ogg, then I have to edit the levels. But if I make the new files as bor files, with the same name they had, will I be able to avoid having to edit the text files?  ???

I'm definitely going to stick with the BOR format. It just seems a bit easier. I just tried to replace a couple of the sound effect WAV files... I made sure that the new files were also in wav format and had the exact same name as the ones I was replacing. Then I used makepak.bat to repack the game, but for some reason, when I tested out the new pak file, the game didn't recognize any of the changes. It's still had the exact same sound effects that were there before. Do you have any idea what I may have done wrong? I really thought that it was just as simple as making sure the new files had the exact same name and extension as the old ones, removing the old ones, and then just simply dropping them into the folder  :-\

i prefer ogg files personally, easier to work with.
after you replaced files, it plays the old sound one? maybe a wrong path somewhere? what do you want to change exactly?

I was just trying to change the sound effect for when you pick up a health item. I didn't touch any of the text files or change anything with that. I also made sure that the new sound had the exact name and was the same file type as the one that I was replacing. Now, wouldn't that be enough? Nothing was changed with the path so I don't get why the game wouldn't just play those sounds like they were before. Also, I completely removed the original sound file, so when I repacked it, I don't know how it could even use the original sound. It's as if the changes I made were completely disregarded

Did you test the new pak file in same folder as unpaked mod?
Try testing new pak file in a different folder

Did you save the wav as a 16bit PCM, with 22KHz sampling rate?

Also: you don't need to repack the game to play it.

No I didn't do that. I didn't even know that I should or how to... How do I go about doing that to see how it would function in the game?

To be quite honest, I didn't even bother with those settings, because I really didn't know to do that. I simply dropped the mp3s that I wanted to use into iTunes and converted them that way. Looking at it right now, there is an option for 16-bit, but there is no 22KHz option. The closest option is 22.050KHz. Would that work?

Also, how do I test or play the game without repacking it? The game is all in folders. Doesn't it need to be put together in one file to run?

No, you don't need to pak a mod to play it. Just run the .exe and it should run :)
Only pak the mod if the mod is really completed

Offtopic: This thread should be in OpenBoR section BTW

Hey I'm sorry about posting it in the wrong place. Maybe and mod can move it to the right place for me. As far as the. Exe file, are you saying there's an exe file that's in the  data folder after I unpacked the pak file for the game? Because I don't see that anywhere. Just to reiterate, I used paksplode.bat to unpack the game that I was wanting to edit, which caused a folder to appear when it was finished. That folder only contains some other folders which include one for backgrounds, characters, levels, music, scenes, sounds, Sprites, and a levels.txt, lifebar.txt, models.txt, and a pal.act file. There is no exe file, unless you're talking about the openbor.exe?

Yes, I'm referring to openbor.exe :)

If you need example, you can download this:
https://www.mediafire.com/?mdld5ez2778jdr9

This is base mod for modders to start modding.
This mod has blank bor.pak in paks folder to allow playing mod in data folder by running openbor.exe

You'd need the bor.pak in paks folder to run the paxploded pak of yours

HTH

hahaha so it took me a second to understand what your message meant, but then I finally got it!! So I  can preview it, but how do I finalize it in a pak? I've tried using makepak, bat but it doesn't include any of the changes I've made  :-\
