I resurrected this mod of mine, it was started after Crime Buster and before Contra but put it on shelf to focus on Contra mod. I wonder who still remember this mod ::)

Anyways, I use higher resolution this time so it took lot of time rescaling everything including making backgrounds

Unlike regular mods, this mod is shoot'm up game. Or I should say puzzle shoot'em up game ;)

Player controls a ship which flies in area filled with shapes. Each shape has color and player can destroy it by shooting it with same colored beam. Shooting shapes with wrong color will produce sideeffect depending on the shape
There are 4 colored beams to shoot with i.e Red, Green, Yellow and Blue. Player can shoot any beam but not all beams at once :)
Each stage is filled with certain shapes e.g 1st stage with boxes , 2nd stage with hexagons and 3rd stage with balls. Each shape has its own properties

This mod is for this Game Jolt jam:

Game Jolt Jams

Enjoy! :D

Congratulations Bloodbane!

The game concept is really good.
You took the idea of the Dreamcst shooter Ikaruga and took her much, much further.
Really great and fun.

Hey Bloodbane, i see when the player block the proyectil of the enemy,  he reflect in the same angle to the enemy.
How can make that?

Player blocking? player's ship can't block anything in this game
I believe you've mistaken this game with Aliens Clash :)

Yes!
Sorry for thath.
I was wrong title it I meant Alien Crash.
I write the post in a smartphone,  an the titles don't show properly, they flash and go, until the change of forum theme.

I'm updating this mod. Even though it's not complete yet, I'll post some shots:

From the shots, you can see many new things such as new stage, combo counter, blinking effect and updated HUD which shows the allowance of 2nd player

Combo counter, as name implies, increments when correct shapes are destroyed but immediately drops to 0 when a shape is shot wrong

There are steel boxes which can't be destroyed and they will appear in this new box stage. There are also new hexes which has slight different property than regular hexes

The 1st shot doesn't show it but actually it was taken when player gained Rainbow powerup which changes shot to rainbow beam capable of destroying shape with any of the 4 colors
2nd shot shows the blinking FX when temporary invincibility is taken

It's done! Rainbow v2 is complete and you can download it from the link in first post

v2 supports 2 players, has powerups, more levels and more shapes

Enjoy! :)

Good job BB!
I'll try it now!!
The fonts looks like some amiga or atari game! ::)

So I played this mod.

The overall concept is pretty original; it's Ikaruga with more color-coded bullets, and no enemies. At least, no enemies in the sense of AI controlled entities that fire back at you. Yet despite the fact there are no adversarial entities in play, the game offers plenty of difficulty. I want to commend you on that, Bloodbane, because in many ways Rainbow is a puzzle game disguised as a shooter.

Unfortunately in my case, this is where subjectivity interferes with objectivity. I'm not much of a puzzle game fan. Sure, I don't dislike them; I find myself playing Tetris and Pokemon Puzzle Challenge on the Gameboy every now and then. But those kinds of games get old to me quick--and, well, likewise so did this game.

BUT! Please don't misunderstand. I actually like this mod a lot. I like the concept, I'm impressed that it was accomplished, and I think it serves a dual role as game and tutorial, wrapped up in one package. It's a very "Bloodbane" game: technically impressive, brutally difficult, but ultimately a shining example of what can be done with this engine.

I'd have to say, the difficulty is partially what gets the better of me. Switching between the four colors on such short notice has proven to be a far tougher task than it originally sounds. Yeah, it's easy on the first few levels, where you essentially shoot blocks at your leisure. But as it progresses (or if you roll the dice and take a warp panel like I did), it becomes seemingly insurmountable. Navigating through walls where you have to blast your way via color coordination is tough enough; having mere seconds to accomplish this is even tougher.

The rainbow power up item helps a ton, believe me. But for my luck, it didn't drop nearly enough. It was a taunting savior--appearing least when I most needed it, and most when I could have casually done without it. Also, I liked how your score decreases for shooting the wrong color, or shooting impenetrable blocks. This is one shoot 'em up that I can never hope to place on any high score board, ever.

As an aside, I can still see the influence of my original "Shmup Demo" from the Lavalit days. I used Megaman Battle Network 6 and Triggerheart Exelica music in it; and those same songs are still present here.  ;D

TL;DR: The actual gameplay isn't my taste, but I respect and appreciate the complexity of it.

I'm on the same boat NickyP. it's not my type of game, but I think Bloodbane has done excellent work.  I've told him it could easily be a commercial game, I was trying to encourage him to complete the game with royalty free music, sfx, fonts etc.  so it could be sold.    it might not be the typical game for a fan of openbor, but it could have a much wider appeal to the mobile gaming crowd or a simply a family friendly audience.

it could just use a new menu, some original music, some eye candy etc.  I started adding some flashing rainbow cutscenes and logo's into the game, but I remembered Bloodbane said he has problem with games that have flashing screens and left it be.  Thou I think that's what would appeal to people with something like this.  The graphics for the stages and enemies, thou basic, I think looks professional.  The player ships on the other hand don't seem to match the rest of the style.  If the rest of the game's graphics, HUD, player ship, fonts etc.  If they could match this overall style, it would look very slick.

@Bloodbane, sorry I diddn't get the music sorted out yet, but I couldn't find enough royalty free tracks in similar quality that matched what you requested :(  I have tons of royalty free electronic music saved that could be used thou, you would need to have a listen, it's just not in the style we discussed. IMO it would sound best with some simple chiptune music.  In the style of old games, friendly music, like super mario etc.
