So it's October 1st and I think it's finally time for me to announce what I've been working on. Lately I've been working extremely hard on sprites, gameplay, and using script. I'll be borrowing a few elements from a few of my favorite modders like Bloodbane, Mr.Q, and Volcanic.

Details: Zier the Burning Fox is on a quest to find out his origins. He is on a dangerous path to find his mother and father and find out why he was abandoned as a infant. He was raised by "Revlis The Silver Fox". Along the way, Zier will meet a lot of friends and foes. The young boy will develop into a grown man as the game continues, and his evil power will become a positive and negative as he tries to find answers. My goal is to combine fun addictive gameplay with great story telling. Zier is my 1st created character ever. Expect to push my limit with this game. ;) Gameplay will be posted soon.

Expect to see some familiar faces along the way! :-X

The Burning Fox!â„¢ - The Return of Zier Movie

Honestly I was debating on whether or not to use shadow or not. I'll work on some more sprites and make my final decision.

Great! I thought you are going to resume your Bloodlines mod but instead you start a new one :D

I think the shading could be a lot better. Look at his pants: its almost SOLID BLACK.

That's Skull Kingz style, as long he is consistent it's fine for me.

Yes. Same here with Bloodbane. We accept his style. BTW I gotta say it's great on images even though I haven't completed watching the full length.

I don't want to sound picky here, but this is wrong (have you saw something with no shadows and plain colors?) and I don't think we should encourage something like that (this is a common thing on some Mugen foruns)... but if the creator thinks its okay, who I am to disagree? :)

*Quick update* 10-3-13
I added shadow to Zier's pants and hair. It looks a little better.

can you make video ratio bigger for new game than skull kingz. will help with gameplay.

I like your animations in the video, but with the sprites for the game (same as skull kingz) they look like they have been painted over another character ? dont know how you could fix that, except adding more shadows on clothing and skin

look foreward to your mod

I forgot to mention that earlier, I upgraded to widescreen 480 x 272 with 16 bit color. I switched from Xbox to Wii, so I'm not stuck with 320 x 240, 8 bit. I can be more creative.

As far as my sprites, I already know I can't please everyone. They are painted over other sprites. This is just my style lol, I'm comfortable with it. As long as it looks like my comic books and cartoons.

Bloodline just wasn't doing it for me unfortunately. It never made it past the Idle Stance. I lost inspiration when I started animating The Burning Fox movie. That mod was just something I shouldn't have mentioned lol. ???

But I'm glad you like my style. As long as it's consistent.

I agree with bloodbane the art style is fine as long as all characters are the same.
And I always keep my character looking the same. I keep my style the same. Honestly does this looks too sloppy for a test image?

Honestly I think you're being too picky, no disrespect. What is right? What is wrong?

Question: Was it right or wrong for Capcom to mix up sprites  in Capcom vs Snk 2? Remember Morrigan, and the leftover Alpha sprites that were used?

You don't think that this community should encourage my style. I'm just saying I was never really searching for acceptance, I just kind of earned it I guess when I made Skull Kingz. But if you play "Skull Kingz 2008", "Skull Kingz 2010 Remake", or even "Overload", then you will know that my end results are never sloppy or choppy or rushed, it's just my style.

They're not perfect, and my style isn't perfect, but it's really all about good gameplay at the end of the day. You can't have good art and sprites with poor gameplay.

The Openbor community accept my style because all of the characters and levels are edited in one style. That's all that really matters. The accept the fact that I can start and finish a project. Hope I didn't come off too strong. It's all opinions. 8)

No, you got it all wrong (and maybe personal), or maybe its my bad english striking again  :P

I mean this:

Again, I won't be the one which will hold you. If you have fun with that, its fine to me.

See ya.

To me there is no problem with game sprites at all since it is a result of Skull Kingz personal style. But you know, it is just my 2 cents.

i know its hard to take feedback when it is constructive or negative at times but everyone's intention is to see you deliver the best product possible.

your animated movie looked so good, you should be really proud of yourself. The problem i have with the game sprites is they appear to lack the same detail, look rushed even though im sure they are not. As you are animating over existing sprites maybe mix up the characters you are using as bases so your created characters move differently or have some really unique attacks

Oh no, I don't mind constructive or negative criticism at all, everyone has their own opinion. My main concern is drawing with pixels. I'm so use to drawing/animating on a big canvas. Haha.. ??? So sometimes it feels odd converting a hand drawn character into a 2d low resolution character. I tend to lose details. It may be easy for spriters out here, but hey, I know my limit. lol.

The details you added to the sprites aren't bad at all, it's just the fact that it doesn't fit Zier. It looks good though, but I'll keep the solid black cut off shirt.

I understand my friend, it's just a personal style of my own. It's not the greatest, but I'm comfortable. I wish I was Capcom good! I should stick to animating. Jk. :D

I can't even draw so you got me beat.  :D

I always liked these sprites too, the skull kings mod was cool.
It doesn't bother me so much about the aforementioned because the overall style is cool.

I agree about the shadow but, and does look better now.

How nsw25 did that edit is exactly what I always thought they needed thou, just some simple detail like on the chest.

They always remind me a bit of adventure games like 'Day of The Tentacle' sprites, any games with a style like that is more than welcome.  ;)

They use this type of shadow, when black is a main colour they use dark or light grey for shadow.
You can see how a little shadow does a lot for them and the simple outlines on the pants etc.
DOTT_Bernard_Sprite_Rips_by_jhroberts.png

( I've tried to mimic the shadow for sprite edits in my DOTT mod, so I know it's not as easy as it looks, at least for me.  It's like a fine line sometimes between looking like shadow and just being pixel mess. :p )

Anyhow I knew the guys are just trying to help, Ilu really knows his stuff too, so if you don't mind the critique he'll have good advice.

Here's a link posted in the forum with tons of good tutorials on pixel art and creating sprites from drawings - http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/416986/misc/SpriteTutorials.html

Like I said I can't even draw, but you can probably learn heaps from these.

Keep up the good work.

I wish I was Capcom good!

Now that you mentioned, I found a link a month ago about ways to make Capcom style. If you like Capcom style, you can take a look at this link here. Not only just Capcom style, but there are (also) other game styles you can try to emulate so you can sprite on your own.

*Quick Update* 10-10-13

I've updated Zier's Walk & Run animation. I've added shadow to his hair and pants. No problem. ;)

I've been working on his Evil side also! >:(

A lot of Ken Masters inspiration here. Mainly Violent Ken. I couldn't help it, he's my favorite 2d character. lol

Everything below are simply test picture, far from the final product.
